Sav nav sees tourist traffic bypassing west Mayo town

GOOGLE Maps and sat nav is causing tourist coaches and campervans to bypass Louisburgh.

When travelling from Galway or Westport, they're being directed via Tully, where the road emerges at Old Head, some miles outside Louisburgh.

Local Councillor Chris Maxwell has raised the matter at a municipal district meeting where he said it is an ongoing issue.

Not alone is Louisburgh missing out from the economic benefit of the coaches and campervans passing through, but the road via Tully is not fit for that traffic, he said.

He wondered if the council could follow up, so that people stay on the R335 into Louisburgh and head on to Leenane that way.

The council's roads office will raise the matter with Google, he was told in response.
