'Staggering' work by lifeguards on Mayo beaches this summer

LIFEGUARDS on Mayo's beaches have been congratulated on their work in preventing accidents and dealing with emergencies over the summer months.

The scale of their work was highlighted in the chief executive's monthly report to the members of Mayo County Council.

From May 31 to September 14 lifeguards conducted four board rescues, 423 first aids, and 77 assists, with 391 accidents prevented and some 21,358 advices given to members of the public.

Councillor Michael Loftus hailed these 'staggering facts' around the lifeguards looking after and protecting people on our beaches.

It was important to acknowledge and thank them for their work, he said.
