€609,000 available for Mayo community climate action projects

MAYO County Council has announced that applications are now open for round 2 of the Community Climate Action Programme (CCAP), following a successful launch event at Kiltimagh Museum as part of Climate Action Week 2025.

This second round of funding will provide €609,000 to support eligible community groups across Mayo in delivering innovative climate action projects. The programme is a national initiative from the Department of the Climate, Energy and the Environment delivered locally by Mayo County Council.

The launch featured stories from groups who successfully implemented projects under phase 1.

One such project was by Knock Kiltimagh United, and club secretary Mary Niland explained: “Thanks to the Community Climate Action Programme funding we’ve insulated our clubhouse, installed solar panels, and upgraded our lighting to LEDs. The building is noticeably warmer and more comfortable, and our energy bills have actually gone into the minus for the past couple of billing cycles.

“We’re proud to be doing our part for climate action while saving money that can now be reinvested in our club.”

The launch event concluded with a guided walk through Kiltimagh Emigrant Park, another round 1 funding recipient. The walk highlighted an impressive range of biodiversity projects delivered under the programme, including locally made sustainable willow waste baskets, a 30-metre 'dead hedge', bird boxes with attraction calls, a nesting wall for sand martins, wild bee hives, a house martin tower, raised beds, and enhancements to the park’s already remarkable living willow classroom.

The programme provides 100% capital funding for small, medium and large projects, up to a maximum of €100,000 per project. The application period runs from October 18 to December 12, 2025, and all applications must be submitted via the Mayo County Council Consult platform.

Projects must align with one or more of five key themes: Community Energy, Travel, Food and Waste, Shopping and Recycling, and Local Climate and Environmental Action, and help groups towards reducing emissions, enhancing biodiversity, and building climate resilience.

To assist applicants, there will be online webinars on Wednesday, October 29, at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, November 4, at 7 p.m., offering practical advice on how to complete the application form and develop strong project proposals.

To register for these webinars, visit the CCAP webpage at mayo.ie/environment/climate-action, where you will also find the link to the application form and further information on the funding criteria.
