Mayo appeal for action on 'scandalous' electricity bills

"Families across Mayo are being absolutely hammered by electricity costs, and the latest report from RTÉ only confirms what people have been saying to me for months: that we’re paying far more than we should be."

That's according to Mayo independent Councillor Harry Barrett.

Barrett continued: "RTÉ figures shows that Irish households are being charged nearly three times the wholesale price of electricity. That’s scandalous, and it’s pushing ordinary people to the limit.

"Across Europe, electricity prices have dropped as wholesale costs have fallen, but not in Ireland. Other countries have passed savings on to households, yet Irish families are still paying some of the highest energy bills in Europe. That’s simply unfair and needs to be tackled head-on.

"Every week I’m hearing from families and pensioners in Castlebar who are cutting back on heating, lights, and even food just to keep the bills paid.

"This simply cannot go on. The Government needs to step in immediately, not with more talk, but with real action to bring prices down and hold energy companies to account.

"It’s time for TD's to stand up for households in Mayo and across the country.

"People deserve fairness and honesty when it comes to something as basic as keeping the lights on."
