Ground broken on east Mayo housing project
GROUND has been broken on a new housing development in east Mayo.
Site clearance works have begun at Abbeyquarter in Ballyhaunis for the construction of 25 local authority homes.
Welcoming the works, local Councillor Alma Gallagher explained how the homes will be a mix of two- and three-bedroom units.
It is an 18-month contract that will create over 140 job opportunities for employees, contractors, subcontractors, and technicians, providing a significant boost to local shops and services, she added.
Said Councillor Gallagher: “I was particularly delighted to meet many young people from Ballyhaunis and the surrounding areas who are involved in this important development.
“Thank you to Mayo County Council chief executive Kevin Kelly, our director of services, Tom Gilligan, and Padraic Flanagan for their invaluable support in getting this project off the ground.
“At every opportunity I am advocating for a mixture of social and affordable housing for Ballyhaunis, Knock and Claremorris. A one size fits all approach where emphasis is focused on the conversion of commercial to residential to meet housing needs will not work.”
