Mayo road deaths 'highest per capita' in Ireland

Nine road fatalities have occurred in Mayo so far this year.

That represents a rate of 5.9 per 100,000 of the population.

This statistic, published by the Irish Independent, means Mayo joins Donegal, Roscommon and Galway as having the highest rates of road deaths.

Mayo has a rate almost six times that of Dublin, where 17 road fatalities have been recorded to date in 2025.

Road-safety campaign group Parc has revealed that fatalities involving motorcyclists and pedal cyclists have spiralled to the highest level in almost two decades.

By Sunday, October 26, a total of 139 people had died on the roads so far this year; two more than for the same period last year.

The 139 deaths involved 56 drivers, 29 pedestrians, 10 passengers, 28 motorcyclists, 13 pedal cyclists, two e-scooter users and one pillion passenger.

Almost one in three deaths have involved motorcyclists and pedal cyclists – a rate not witnessed since 2008.

A Parc survey found that one in three road deaths this year have involved people aged 30 years and under.
