Music of Mayo celebrates International Uilleann Piping Day
MUSIC of Mayo will mark International Uilleann Piping Day 2025 with a special gathering celebrating the rich tradition of uilleann piping in County Mayo.
Taking place next Saturday at Bridge St, Castlebar, this warm and welcoming event brings together pipers, musicians and music enthusiasts from across the county to experience the art of uilleann piping.
The afternoon will include a fascinating illustrated lecture by Michael Kelly, 'A Celebrated Mayo Piper in New York: The Michael Carney Story', exploring the life of an exceptional musician who carried the sound of Mayo across the Atlantic.
Renowned poet and writer Terry McDonagh will read his evocative poem 'The Piper of Treenabontry' - a tribute to uilleann piper Joe Shannon, born in Treenabontry, Kiltimagh, in 1916. Terry will be joined by acclaimed uilleann piper Emer Mayock, whose music will accompany the reading.
The event will also feature performances from a gathering of outstanding uilleann pipers including Seán Ó Loinsigh, Diarmaid Moynihan, young uilleann pipers from around the county and many more - offering audiences the chance to experience the unique sound of the uilleann pipes both solo and in ensemble.
Everyone with an interest in traditional music - and especially in the uilleann pipes - is warmly invited to attend. It’s an opportunity to connect with Mayo’s musical heritage, meet fellow musicians and immerse yourself in the sound and story of the pipes.
Admission is free, and all are welcome.
Join them upstairs at Bridge St Bar & Venue, Castlebar, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, to celebrate Mayo’s piping heritage and the vibrant tradition that continues to inspire musicians around the world.
