Council-led Mayo housing project must include affordable homes element

AN affordable housing element must be included in a new council-led development in Castlebar, a local councillor has insisted.

Sixty-four social homes are proposed at Lawn Road in the town, with a Part 8 planning application currently open for public submissions.

Councillor Donna Sheridan, at a municipal district meeting, expressed disappointment that the plan does not include any affordable homes.

It has to have an affordable element, she insisted, asking management why this wasn't considered. And if it was, why was it not part of the development.

It is important to have some affordable housing for people in the town, she said, requesting a report on the matter for the next municipal meeting.
