Lives put at risk as buoys are removed along Mayo greenway
A NUMBER of life buoys along a riverside greenway in Mayo were removed over the weekend.
The threat to life as a result of the actions has been called out by Councillor Ger Deere.
Over the weekend, several life buoys along the greenway in Castlebar were thrown into the river.
“This is not only disrespectful to our community but also extremely dangerous,” said Councillor Deere.
“These life-saving devices are there for a reason. They could be the difference between life and death in an emergency.
“With the river running high at the moment, they are absolutely essential and must be respected at all times.”
Tampering with or removing a life buoy isn’t a harmless prank or Halloween fun but a reckless action that puts real lives at risk, he added.
“We ask everyone to take pride in our shared spaces, look out for one another, and report any misuse immediately.
“Lifebuoys save lives.”
