Mayo councillor outraged over 'shocking' sheep kill

A Mayo elected representative has condemned a dog attack in the Louisburgh area which left several sheep dead and others badly injured.

Gardaí confirmed they received a report of the incident at a property in Louisburgh at around 8.30am on Friday morning, October 31.

A number of sheep were killed in the attack, and investigations are ongoing.

Independent Ireland councillor and Louisburgh native Chris Maxwell described the scene as “shocking” and appealed to all dog owners to take responsibility for keeping their animals under control.

“To all dog owners, can you please make sure your dogs are secured day and night,” said Cllr Maxwell.

“The damage caused was shocking, sheep killed and others wounded and very distressed. It’s also very distressing for the farmer and neighbours involved.

“No matter how well-behaved a dog is when they are with you, once left alone, they can cause serious damage. The Guards have been notified and are looking into the incident.”

The Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) has also urged farmers to report all incidents of sheep kills to the gardaí and to contact their local dog warden.
