Over 1,000 cattle sold at Mayo mart
BALLA Mart saw its biggest day in a long time on Saturday with over 1,000 cattle sold.
Averages were up for store bullocks while heavier bullocks 500kg plus remained much the same to last week.
Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.99/kg, with most making from €2,000 to €2,400, or €6/kg, with many returning buyers realising time is running out with only six Saturday sales left before Christmas!
Store bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged €5.10/kg while heavier bullocks 500kg plus averaged €4.67/kg.
There were some smashing heavy Continental bullocks weighing 650kg to 850kg that sold from €3,000 to €3,500.
Tops in the bullocks included: 295kg CHX €2,000; 360kg LMX €2,280; 460kg LMX €2,760; 675kg CHX €3,200; 795kg LMX €3,370; 840kg MOX €3,490.
In the heifers, stores 300kg to 400kg averaged €5.14/kg - up 30 cent/kg on last week. Heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.91/kg - just up by 6 cent/kg and heifers 500kg plus averaged €4.67/kg.
A smashing 620kg BBX heifer made €4,100 (€6.61/kg) while a 665kg Limousin sold for €3,850 (€5.79/kg.).
Top heifer prices included: 270kg CHX €1,300; 395kg CHX €2,380; 475kg LMX €3,640; 550kg BBX €3,700; 620kg BBX €4,100.
Dry cows 500kg plus averaged €3.66/kg. This was the biggest sale of dry cows in a long while, with 155 for sale. The tops was a seven-year-old cow that made €3,660 for a farmer from Ballindine.
There was a special sale of 22 in-calf heifers by a Knock farmer who presented some lovely red Limousin heifers. Best was an April ‘23 LMX that sold online for €5,950 (€8.62/kg).
In all there were just over 50 lots of springers and 21 of these made over €7/kg and 11 sold for over €5,000.

WEANLING SALE
Last week's weanling sale was big, especially in the bulls, with over 400 bulls booked, a good trade. There was a lovely selection of calves suitable for farmers who were out in force.
Export type bulls weighing 320kg to 400kg were making around €5.16-€5.60/kg, or from €1,500 to €2,000 on average, barring the exception.
One May born bull weighing 265kg made €2,440 for a Newport farmer, while a farmer from Tubbercurry had a pen of heavier bulls that made upwards of €2,900.
Twenty per cent of stock were bought online.
In a heifers, a 400kg Belgian Blue, presented by a Cong farmer and suitable for future breeding, got great buying at €3,800 (€9.50/kg).
One March ’25 born 5-star Charolais heifer, 360kg, was bought online for €3,020 (€8.39/kg) from a Claremorris farmer.
The selection of stock for feeding may be getting lighter - down from around 350kg to 300kg and averaging €5.80/kg or €1,750 for quality lots.
