Tributes paid to late Mayo businessman who had many friends

THE late Claremorris businessman Jimmy Gallagher was warmly remembered at a municipal district meeting in the town today.

His friend Councillor Richard Finn led tributes to a man described as a 'complete businessman', whose infectious personality made him a friend of young and old.

Mr. Gallagher, of Lakeview House, Rooskeybeg, Claremorris, and The Shamrock Bar, died suddenly at his residence earlier this week.

His funeral Mass takes place tomorrow (Thursday) in St. Colman's Church, Claremorris, at 12 noon.

Claremorris was plunged into shock and sorrow when news emerged of the passing of Mr. Gallagher, said Councillor Finn.

He recalled how Jimmy started life in the pub trade at 16 and found it to be his mission and vocation in life.

“He was a complete businessman, incorporating an infectious personality, a professional approach to his work, business and his customers,” said Councillor Finn.

He became known nationally and internationally from his days at the Beaten Path, and also traded at the Goat Tavern in Claremorris and more recently The Shamrock Bar.

Jimmy was a 'friend to everyone' and Councillor Finn said he was proud to have him as a lifelong personal friend. The community mourns his loss and he extended sympathy to his family, partner Sandra, and thousands of friends.

Councillor Patsy O'Brien described Mr. Gallagher as a gentleman, who spoke freely to everyone and was a wonderful businessman. He will be missed by young and old.

A 'colossus' in the business sector in Claremorris was how he was summed up by Councillor Damien Ryan.
