Mayo Mass to mark World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

MAYO Road Safety Office and Mayo Roads Policing are joining forces to mark World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, which takes place on Sunday, November 16.

A special memorial Mass will take place in Knock Basilica on November 16 to commemorate this special event.

The objective of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is to remember people who tragically lost their lives on our roads as well as those seriously injured. It is also a day to acknowledge the crucial work carried out by emergency service personnel.

Since its inception in 1993, World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims has been observed globally, playing a crucial role in honouring the millions of people who have tragically lost their lives or been seriously injured on our roads.

To date this year, 148 (figure as of November 7, 2025) people have tragically lost their lives on Irish roads.

Frances Mitchell, Mayo Road Safety Officer, stated: “On Sunday we will remember the lives tragically lost on our roads and the families whose worlds have been forever changed.

“Each statistic represents a person - a loved one, a friend, a colleague or a member of our community.

“While road traffic deaths are counted in the year they occur, families and the wider community remain bereaved forever. The effect on the emergency services, whose work involves facing the consequences of road traffic collisions on a daily basis, is also profound.

“The World Day of Remembrance is a time to honor their memory and renew our commitment to making our roads safer for everyone.”

Speaking in advance of this year’s commemoration, Garda Inspector David Tiernan, Mayo Roads Policing, reflected on the numbers who have lost their lives on our roads, with nine fatalities to date in 2025 in County Mayo, in comparison to 17 fatalities for the same period in 2024. He said: “Whilst we welcome this decrease, it is important that road users to not become complacent. These figures do not include the countless numbers left with life-changing injuries over the same period.

“We all know someone whose lives have been deeply affected by the loss of a friend, colleague, relative.”

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims Mass will take place on Sunday, November 16, at 12 noon in Knock Basilica.
