Pipe replacement will future-proof Mayo town's water supply
WORKS to replace pipes from the local water treatment plant to Kiltimagh will future-proof the town.
The existing piping is 'archaic' and leaks, Councillor Adrian Forkan told a municipal meeting this week.
Over 1.5km of ageing water mains will be replaced on the Swinford Road (R320) as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.
Works started this week, with Councillor Forkan describing it as 'a job that needs to be done to develop the town further'.
If not replaced, there won't be enough water to feed the town, he said.
The Swinford road will be closed for HGVs and a lot of through traffic, but there is local access, Councillor Forkan explained.
Acknowledging that it will take time, works will take a break coming up to Christmas to allow things run more smoothly.
