Mayo outdoor swimming facilities to receive €22k investment

Outdoor swimming facilities in Mayo will benefit from funding of €22,000, which will allow people to enjoy the health benefits of outdoor swimming.

Minister Alan Dillon outlined: “This funding will be used at four locations including Lough Lannagh in Castlebar and Ballina Outdoor Pool to provide two swimming shelters, two shower units, a steel ladder, depth marker, barrier rails and nine outdoor swimming lockers.

"We are so lucky to have facilities like these in Castlebar and Ballina. The location of two further swimming shelters is currently under discussion by Mayo County Council.

"This funding will allow people to reap the rewards of all the benefits associated. It will ensure that more people, regardless or age or ability can safety enjoy Mayo’s natural waters.

"This is the second year of the scheme which aims to make Ireland’s approved outdoor swimming locations more accessible, enabling more people to enjoy the health benefits of outdoor swimming.

"Swimming locations in 17 local authority areas will each receive allocations which total €330,000, supporting the provision and upgrade of handrails, swim shelters, access ladders, safety notice boards, shower facilities and beach wheelchairs.

“These enhancements will make these approved locations more accessible, particularly for people with reduced mobility, and will build on the progress made since the scheme was introduced in 2024,” concluded Minister Dillon.
