More social and affordable homes for Mayo under new plan

Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed the government’s new Delivering Homes, Building Communities 2025–2030 plan, describing it as a landmark investment in housing that will bring real and lasting benefits for families and communities across Mayo.

Minister Dillon said: "This plan is about delivering homes and building stronger communities.

"For Mayo, it means more social and affordable homes, revitalised towns and villages, and the infrastructure needed to support families, workers, and older people. It is a whole-of-Government commitment to ensuring that Mayo thrives."

More homes for families and communities

Delivery of 90,000 starter homes nationally, with Mayo set to benefit through new local developments.

Record levels of social housing, contributing to the national target of 12,000 new builds per year to 2030.

An expanded €500 million Land Acquisition Fund to help Mayo County Council and approved housing bodies secure sites for new homes.

Dedicated local authority housing delivery teams to focus exclusively on social and affordable housing across Mayo.

Supporting first-time buyers and families

The Starter Homes Programme will deliver 15,000 affordable home supports annually through schemes such as Help to Buy and the First Home Scheme, directly benefiting Mayo families, couples, and single buyers.

The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant is being expanded, helping to bring more derelict and long-term vacant homes back into use in Mayo’s towns and villages.

Revitalising Rural Mayo

Continued investment through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) to breathe new life into towns and villages across the county.

Expansion of the Ready to Build Scheme, supporting local SME builders in Mayo to deliver new, mixed-tenure communities.

The Town Centre First policy will further strengthen Mayo’s local businesses, services, and communities.

Homes for Older People and People with Disabilities

A €130 million national allocation in 2026 for the Housing Adaptation Grant, ensuring Mayo households can adapt their homes to meet accessibility and mobility needs.

Delivery of a wider mix of housing types, including one-bedroom and four-bedroom homes, to support diverse family structures in Mayo.

Investment in Infrastructure

€28.2 billion in national exchequer funding for housing and €12.2 billion for water and wastewater services, ensuring infrastructure can support new housing developments.

A new €1 billion Infrastructure Investment Fund will help unlock development sites in towns such as Ballina, Castlebar, Claremorris, Westport and many more supporting sustainable local growth.

Minister Dillon concluded: "We are tackling vacancy, supporting families, and ensuring Mayo’s towns and villages continue to thrive.

"This plan is not just about bricks and mortar, it’s about building sustainable communities where people want to live, work, and raise families. Mayo will see real, tangible benefits from this investment."
