Safety works needed at junction in south Mayo town
WORKS are needed to make a junction in Ballinrobe safer.
Councillor Damien Ryan has sought an update on an application for improvement works on the Claremorris Road and Aurivo store junction in Ballinrobe, asking if it will incorporate traffic calming on Abbey Street and a pedestrian crossing at Sli Na Roba.
He was told works proposed at the Claremorris Road/Watsons Lane junction associated with the Safe Routes to School Programme should progress through the stages with the National Transport Authority (NTA) next year, commencing with appointment of consultants.
A bus stop proposal at the same location was declined because it was felt that funding through an Active Travel Project was more appropriate.
Mayo County Council will be liaising with the NTA, Active Travel team and the bus stop team with the aim of progressing the project in 2026.
Councillor Ryan, at a municipal meeting, urged that the matter be expedited, saying the junction needs to be regulated, and he asked for provision to be made in next year's road work programme coupled with working with the NTA.
This is ongoing for a long time, Councillor Michael Burke noted, and works are needed to make the location safer.
He also wondered if speed ramps are needed on Abbey Street. He dislikes them but said he doesn't see any alternative.
