Top price of €10,800 at special in-calf heifer Mayo sale

WALTER Brennan’s 18th annual in-calf heifer sale was held at Balla Mart on Friday evening.

There were 48 lots on offer at an average weight of 882kg and eight lots made in excess of €10/kg.

Best was a Belgian Blue heifer weighing 770kg that made €10,800 (€14.09/kg). This heifer was black with a white underbelly, sired by Bova AI RZP ‘Peintre De Roupage’ and in calf to LM4184 ‘Loyal'.

In all there was a wide selection and they got great buying, with the ring packed and barely any standing room, and a lot of online activity - 27 lots were sold online.

Walter has extended thanks to all his friends, neighbours and mart staff for their help in preparation and organisation of the sale.

SATURDAY SALE

Saturday's weekly sale saw averages up for store bullocks and heifers. Lighter bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €5.68/kg - up .61 cent/kg, or anything up to €210 a head. Store bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.86/kg - up by 11 cent/kg on last week.

This week there was fewer numbers of factory type heavy bullocks. Bullocks 500kg plus averaged €4.47/kg. Heavy Continental bullocks weighing from 700kg to 750kg sold from €3,020 to €3,500, bought by Irish feedlot buyers.

Top prices in the bullocks included: 270kg LMX €1,700; 390kg LMX €2,500; 405kg CHX €2,540; 485kg LMX €2,720; 700kg BBX €3,020; 755kg SIX €3,500.

Store heifers 300kg to 400kg averaged €5/kg - up 7 cent/kg on last week. Heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.76/kg - up 9 cent/kg, with heifers 500kg plus averaging €4.59/kg - up 17 cent/kg on last week.

The best were two smashing red Limousin heifers, both bought online, one 610kg that made €3,720 (€6.10/kg) and another 525kg LMX which made €3,510 for a Castlebar farmer.

Top prices in the heifers included: 295kg LMX €1,690; 345kg LMX €2,100; 445kg LMX €2,830; 525kg LMX €3,510; 610kg LMX €3,720.

Dry cows 500kg plus averaged €3.68/kg. They were a lot of fleshy cows and the tops was a seven-year-old muscular Belgian Blue that was bought online for €4,600 by a Northern factory buyer from a Belmullet farmer.

There were 48 lots of springers and 15 made over €5,000. The best was a March ’23 in-calf Limousin, due in December, which made €5,900 for a Sligo farmer who had a special sale of 15 cattle.

There was also a dispersal sale of 33 sucklers from a Kilkelly herd and these were lovely cattle that sold very well.
