15 Mayo schools to benefit from Climate Action Summer Works Scheme
Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has welcomed confirmation that 15 Mayo primary and post-primary schools will receive funding under the €90 million Climate Action Summer Works Scheme for 2026.
The announcement, made by Minister for Education and Youth Helen McEntee, confirms approval for 297 projects nationwide. These include 11 primary and four post-primary schools in Mayo, representing a major investment in school facilities across the county.
This scheme allows schools to undertake measures such as insulation upgrades, LED lighting installation, EV charger provision, bike-rack facilities to support active travel, and other climate-focused works alongside traditional maintenance.
A key feature of the scheme is the modernisation of science laboratories in 60 post-primary schools nationwide, with €30 million ring-fenced for these refurbishments. Four Mayo schools – St. Gerald’s College (Castlebar), Davitt College (Castlebar), St. Joseph’s Secondary School (Foxford) and St. Tiernan’s College (Ballina), have been approved for science lab upgrades.
Minister Dillon said: “This announcement is a strong vote of confidence in Mayo’s schools. “Fifteen schools across the county will benefit from essential upgrades, from modern science labs to climate action measures and vital maintenance works. These projects will enhance learning environments, support sustainability, and ensure our students have the facilities they need to thrive under the new curriculum.”
He added: “Science subjects are central to preparing our young people for the future. At primary level, they spark curiosity and problem-solving skills, while at secondary level, modern laboratories give students the hands-on experience they need to pursue careers in medicine, engineering, technology, and research. By investing in science facilities now, we are equipping Mayo’s students with the tools to succeed in a rapidly changing world.”
The Mayo schools approved for funding and the approved works, are as follows: S N Naomh Feichin Claremorris (climate action); S N Naomh Colm Cille Westport (climate action); S N Muire Gan Smal Béal Átha An Fheadha (external environmental works); S N Sheamais Swinford (fabric defects); Myna N S Westport (climate action and roof works); S N Athracht NFA Charlestown (fabric defects); S N Peadar Agus Pol Foxford (external environment projects); Newport Central Baile Ui Bhfiachain (climate action and fabric defects); Barnacarroll Central N S Claremorris (climate action and fabric defects); Gaelscoil Raifteirí Castlebar (fabric defects); Gaelscoil Na gCeithre Maol Béal An Átha (climate action and fabric defects); St. Gerald’s College Castlebar (climate action and science labs); St. Joseph’s Secondary School Foxford (climate action and science labs); St. Tiernan’s College Ballina (climate action and science labs); Davitt College Castlebar (climate action and science labs, and external environment projects).
Minister Dillon concluded: “This investment will make a real difference for Mayo communities. It means safer, more sustainable, and better-equipped schools for our children, and it reflects the Government’s commitment to regional development and climate action.”
