Mayo Gardaí issue warning on distracted driving
Gardaí in the Mayo Roads Policing Unit stopped a van on the N17 this week after the driver was observed struggling to stay within their lane.
On inspection, officers discovered the motorist had been texting while driving.
The incident has prompted fresh warnings about the dangers of distracted driving.
According to the Road Safety Authority, any behaviour that diverts a driver’s attention from the road is considered a distraction and such behaviour, including mobile phone use, is estimated to be a contributing factor in between 20% and 30% of all collisions on Irish roads.
Gardaí reminded motorists that holding a mobile phone while driving carries a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice of €120 and the addition of three penalty points to a licence.
In a message to the public, the Mayo Roads Policing Unit urged drivers to put their phones away:
“Please remember: no message is worth risking your life or someone else’s.”
