Mayo arts centre hosting a delectable December

THERE is a multi-dimensional array of performances and events to engage with at the Linenhall, rounding out 2025, from children’s storytelling at its finest, to films for all ages, and festive music.

Moving Words is an expressive reading of Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell’s book, enriched by a simultaneous dance interpretation by Selma Daniel on Friday, December 5.

A true story, two penguins at the Central Park Zoo court build a nest and raise their adopted daughter Tango. In the dance workshop that follows, spread your wings, shake off snow, walk and swim like penguins.

Then turning to the very bear who was discovered in the Princess Grace Park in Newport as she recounts her story at The Adventures of Gráinne Bear, revealing a history that remained hidden for many, many years. Learn all about her connection to Granuaile, Ireland's 16th century Pirate Queen, on Friday, December 19, at this free event for all the family. Gráinne Bear will be accompanied by Pirate Pete, a friendly Pirate, always full of fun.

MUSIC

Dazzling new theatre tour The Crooners at Christmas revels in the golden age of swing with timeless Christmas classics made famous by legends like Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee. Featuring a live band and stunning vocals, this nostalgic show will capture the warmth, charm and glamour of a bygone era on Friday, December 12.

A passionate team of professional performers, Whistleblast Quartet brings its musical voyage and visual magic for families on November 27. Symphonic masterpieces, including Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, are accompanied by shadow puppet animation, plus compelling imagery and video from contemporary artists and the iconic photographer Ernst Haas.

CINEMA

Cinematically, Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, a delightful 1970s style comedy-drama, screens on Tuesday, December 16. With superb and widely-acclaimed turns from a top cast including Paul Giamatti, this charming, funny and bittersweet film proves that Hollywood can still make them like they used to.

And on Saturday, December 20, catch contemporary classic Home Alone on the big screen. Written by John Hughes, Macauley Culkin’s infamous turn as Kevin McCallister follows a young boy left home during the Christmas holidays after the rest of his family goes to Europe.
