Assessment of damaged Mayo pier ahead of funding application
ROONAGH Pier in west Mayo is undergoing an assessment to determine works needed to address structural issues.
An application for funding to do repairs can't be made until that assessment is complete.
Mayo County Council became aware of possible structural issues with the outer section of the pier last month, closing this section as a precautionary measure.
Speaking at the November municipal district meeting yesterday, Councillor Chris Maxwell said emergency funding is available to do the work if the council and government put an application together as soon as possible. And he asked if there was any update on this.
Director of services Joanne Grehan said it is being considered. An assessment is being undertaken and they can't apply for funding until they know what works are needed. That work is being done at the moment.
Councillor Maxwell asked that the council would consult with the local skippers.
It's a serious matter, he said, and something has to be done for transporting people, goods and tourists to and from Inishturk and Clare Island.
