North Mayo loop project is expanding

THE announcement that the Blacksod loop project is now expanding to the Doohoma phase has been welcomed by local councillors.

The safer walking and cycling initiative is a welcome boost for the local community and visitors to north Mayo.

Phase one at Binghamstown is a fantastic project, Councillor Sean Carey told a municipal meeting, expressing thanks to everyone involved.

Councillor Gerry Coyle, in a social media post, said the Blacksod Bay loop project is a wonderful initiative to create a scenic walking and cycling route through the heart of Erris, to showcase some of what the area has to offer.

This phase, he explained, will involve the upgrading and use of the existing road infrastructure, including partially segregated sections, and the focus for the next phase is on the village of Doohoma. It will create an active route through the breathtaking Erris landscape, with completion expected by summer 2026.

This expansion builds on the work already being completed around the Binghamstown/Cross area.

He said: “I am delighted to have worked with my council colleague Councillor Sean Carey on this, together with all the other stakeholders. I commend the National Roads Design Office and also the Belmullet Area Office, especially area manager Séamus Ó Mongáin and engineer Barry Ryan, together with all the staff and overseers for their hard work in developing the project.

“It will hopefully create a safe shared space for pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists which will benefit locals and tourists alike.”
