Mayo senator hails funding breakthrough for western rail corridor
Fine Gael Senator Mark Duffy has welcomed what he described as a “momentous day for Mayo” following confirmation that Phase 1 of the Western Rail Corridor will be funded under the National Development Plan.
Clearing works on the long-closed railway line are expected to begin next year.
The project will see the reopening of the Athenry–Claremorris section, restoring a direct rail link between Mayo and Galway for the first time in decades.
Senator Duffy said the development will be “transformational for the west”, improving connectivity for students, hospital patients and daily commuters travelling between Galway and Mayo and further south to Limerick and Cork.
“This has been a project that I have fought for since entering politics and I am delighted to see it being included today,” he said.
The Mayo senator also acknowledged the long-running campaign efforts that helped bring the project to this point.
“I would like to acknowledge the advocacy of West on Track, elected councillors of Mayo County Council, Oireachtas colleagues and every advocate who has supported the campaign,” he added.
Minister Dara Calleary also added: "I am also delighted that the further development of the Western Rail Corridor has been included in the plan.
It is anticipated that procurement will be complete in 2027 with construction in 2028 at a cost of between €500 million and €1 billion."
