Mayo legal firm celebrates 125th anniversary
A Mayo legal firm has celebrated its 125th anniversary.
P. O'Connor & Son Solicitors, The Old House, Market Square, Swinford, was established in 1900.
A function took place at Belleek Castle, Ballina, to mark the special occasion.
The firm was founded in December 1900 by Patrick O’Connor (1874-1942).
He was a member of a prominent business family in Swinford and president of the Mayo Solicitors’ Bar Association from 1932 to 1942.
The O’Connor family has a long tradition in legal practice in Ireland.
Thomas V. O’Connor (1916-1988) was a solicitor, coroner and the President of the Law Society of Ireland in 1972.
John W. O’Connor (1918-1978) was a barrister and a Circuit Court Judge.
Moya O’Connor (1917-1998) was a solicitor and deputy coroner.
In 2023, the Law Society Ireland celebrated 100 years of pioneering women in the profession and paid tribute to the first 100 women admitted to the roll, including Moya O’Connor.
Moya O’Connor was admitted to the roll of solicitors in 1941 and her legal legacy has inspired four nephews and three grand-nephews to follow in her footsteps.
Patrick O’Connor, senior partner, is a solicitor and notary public. He served as Coroner for Mayo for 38 years before his retirement from the role in October 2024.
In 1998, he was president of the Law Society of Ireland. He has three brothers, all of whom are practising lawyers based in Dublin.
