Roads on Mayo coast falling into the sea

SECTIONS of road are falling into the sea in west Mayo.

Special funding needs to be sought to address issues at Ross and Roslaher, outside Westport, Councillor Johnny O'Malley has told council management.

He explained how one local told him how they have to be very careful when travelling at night as you can't see the verge of the road as it has fallen into the sea.

If the roads aren't repaired now it will cost twice as much further down the line, he warned, with funding needed for the two inlets.

Councillor O'Malley was told the council proposes putting forward the road at Rosclave this year for climate resilience funding, and the others can be considered in a future programme. These roads cost a lot of money, and there's a limited budget, but it's hope to get funding for Rosclave next year.

Councillor O'Malley implored the council to seek funding for the two roads he raised, warning: “Those people will be left marooned.”
