Mayo SPCA calls for action on the urgent need for "Adopt, Don’t Shop" this Christmas

The Mayo SPCA is calling on people this Christmas to adopt and don’t shop if they are thinking about getting a pet this Christmas. Their mission is simple: save animals and give them a second chance. Christmas often sees a rise in impulsive pet adoptions, with well-meaning intentions. However, many pets are abandoned when the excitement fades.

Having recently been feted with a Mayo People of the Year Award for her work and dedication to animal welfare, Marian Biesty (founder of Mayo SPCA) said:

"Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment, not just a Christmas wish. Animals need care and love every day of the year, not just during the holidays.”

Each year, Marian and her hard-working team see puppies and kittens adopted as gifts, only to be surrendered when owners realise the responsibility they’ve taken on. It’s heartbreaking when these animals—full of hope at first—are abandoned just weeks after Christmas.

"Adopting a pet should be about saving a life, not fulfilling a holiday trend," Marian explains. "We want people to understand that adoption is a year-round commitment."

While Marian’s team works tirelessly to find loving homes for every pet, they need your help. "Adoption isn’t just for Christmas—it’s for life."

As we enter this Christmas season, remember: adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment. Let’s make “Adopt, Don’t Shop” a movement that lasts all year long, and give every animal the loving home they deserve.
