Renters in Mayo benefit from tax credit

So far 4,340 people in Mayo have benefitted from the rent tax credit and the numbers continue to grow since it was introduced, Minister of State, Alan Dillon TD has said.

Minister Alan Dillon said: “It’s really positive to see that renters in Mayo are availing of their tax credit, which is putting money back in people’s pocket. However, its clear many haven’t made their claim for 2025.”

Figures provided from the Department of Finance show that while 4,340 people in Mayo claimed their renters tax credit in 2024, only 1,400 have made their claim in Mayo in 2025.

“I strongly encourage those eligible who haven’t claimed their rent tax credit for 2025 to do so and apply, so they don’t miss out on the valuable support,” said Minister Dillon.

Revenue says it does expect the numbers to rise in the coming months as most claims for credits by PAYE taxpayers take place after the year-end, and it is expected that the bulk of claims for 2025 will not be made until 2026.

The Rent Tax Credit has been available for tax years since 2022 and is worth a maximum of €1,000 euro to renters, while for jointly assessed married couples or civil partners, it is worth up to €2,000.

Minister Dillon concluded: “No renter should leave this money behind. The process to apply is simple and puts money back into renters’ pockets.”
