Commitment to honour Castlebar Song Contest

A COMMITMENT to honour the Castlebar Song Contest with a public realm display has been requested by Councillor Cyril Burke.

A site near Shaws, across from Casey's Londis, has been identified.

The plan is for it to be more than a monument; a public realm outdoor visual display honouring an event that ran for 22 years and featured many big name stars.

Councillor Burke has asked that another year won't pass without recognising the song contest.

“It is a huge part of the history of Castlebar,” he said, and was a big at that time as the Rose of Tralee is today.

The council own the land in question, and it would connect the area at the peace park and the TF, home of the contest.

They should give some commitment to progress it in 2026, with funding for a design.

Discussion has taken place about funding for an outdoor interpretative area, Councillor Burke was told in response, and that will be followed up.
