Works start on reopening of Mayo to Galway rail link in major investment
Minister for State Sean Canney has welcomed the start of works on the Western Rail Corridor between Mayo and Galway.
In a post on his Facebook page, he stated: "I was at Tuam Station this week as on-the-ground works began - with clearing and preparation of the rail bed now underway.
"This is the first visible step towards restoring rail services from Athenry - Tuam - Claremorris, reconnecting Galway and Mayo and strengthening transport for the entire west.
"Seeing activity on the line is a significant and symbolic moment for our region.
"The Western Rail Corridor is now a targeted priority in the new Transport Sectoral Plan and this work shows that commitment being put into action.
"I'll keep driving this forward to ensure trains return to Tuam and that we rebuild this vital rail link for communities across the West.
