Call for action on trees in Mayo urban locations

A call has been made to have trees cut back in Mayo urban locations.

Councillor John Caulfield explained: "I am totally against trees being in towns.

"We as a council are paying to unblock drains on account of fallen leaves from trees.

"When you walk down the streets of Ballyhaunis and Kiltimagh it is like walking on a skating rink due to the number of leaves.”

Councillor Neil Cruise concurred.

“I think trees are better off in the countryside or in designated green areas in towns.

“Trees were sown in Foxford 20 years ago and nobody was thinking of the here and now. The height of trees is interfering with the street lighting, and the leaves are also a trip hazard,” he commented.

The members raised their concerns at the monthly municipal district meeting.
