Mayo GAA captain fantastic ties knot with Galway girl Charlotte

One of Mayo’s most successful Gaelic football captains, Hollymount’s Stephen Coen, has today married his long-time love, Charlotte Cooney from Claregalway, in St. Mary’s Church, Bradford, Co. Kildare, before having their wedding reception in Johnstown House Estate.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest team leaders the county has ever produced, Stephen, who is still a member of the Mayo senior panel, has already had a chequered career on the playing field.

While he is searching for an All-Ireland championship senior medal, he has had many great days when lining out for Mayo.

Stephen started playing football at a young age.

His family farm is based outside the village of Hollymount and it’s only two minutes away from GAA grounds.

The sports star led both Mayo minor team and Mayo Under-21 team to All-Ireland titles as captain in 2013 and 2016, respectively.

He also captained UCD to Sigerson Cup success as well as playing for his club Hollymount/Carramore in the 2015/16 All-Ireland Intermediate club football championship final.

Appointed the Mayo senior captain in 2022, Stephen who made his debut in 2015, played in two All-Ireland senior finals, both of which they lost narrowly.

It looks like Gaelic football will continue to play a huge part in the newly wed couple's family home as his bride, Charlotte, has also had a long and distinguished career on the field of play.

With her club Claregalway, she has contested numerous Galway.

In 2019, she was part of the Galway side that reached the Division 1 National League final and a first All-Ireland SFC final since 2005.

She claimed successive O'Connor Cup medals with the University of Limerick in 2014 and 2015.

Back in 2010, the Claregalway club woman was part of the Galway side that claimed the All-Ireland Minor 'A' Football title, defeating Donegal in the final.

In 2011, Cooney won county and provincial medals with Claregalway as they won the Galway JFC title and Connacht Club JFC title.

In 2013, Cooney won county, provincial and All-Ireland club medals with Claregalway as they went on to claim the All-Ireland Club IFC title.

The newly weds are wished a long and healthy life together by everyone in Mayo and Galway.
