Speeding truck driver in Mayo tests positive for cocaine
THE driver of a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) stopped for speeding in Mayo subsequently tested positive for cocaine.
The detection was made as part of An Garda Síochána's Christmas road safety campaign in the county.
The Mayo Roads Policing Unit were conducting a speed checkpoint in Foxford yesterday (Thursday) evening when they detected a HGV laden with a load weighing 30 tonnes travelling at 90km/h in a 60km/h speed zone.
On further inspection, the driver tested positive for cocaine and was also not insured. The vehicle had no tax and no tacograph was in use. The driver was also not wearing a seatbelt.
The driver was subsequently arrested for drug driving and has been charged with dangerous driving, to appear before the courts. The truck was also seized.
An Garda Síochána highlighted: 'Speeding at this level in a built-up area of a town puts everyone at risk.'
The consequences of drug-driving are real; even small amounts can seriously impair reaction times and coordination.
'If you drive under the influence, you're risking your future - and someone else's life.'
