Goalkeeper Robbie Hennelly marked on his return to Mayo against Meath at Longford yesterday.

New Mayo GAA era under Andy Moran starts with a loss to clinical Meath

Mayo senior footballers lost by seven points to Meath (0-23 to 3-13) in a challenge game played in Pearse Park, Longford on Sunday.

Two notable starters for Mayo in this game were Robbie Hennelly in goal and Crossmolina’s Kobe McDonald who played the first half.

Mayo had the advantage of the strong wind in the opening half. They made good use of this advantage as by the time they went in for the interval break they had raced 12 points clear, 2-11 to 0-5.

It was different story in the second half as Meath who were now favoured by the wind, took control of the game.

In this half they outscored Mayo by 24 points to 1-2.

Meath scored a remarkable six two-pointers in a 10-minute spell after the break.

Mayo’s only scorers were two pointed frees and a late goal.

Mayo’s next outing will be on Sunday next when they play Offaly in the annual charity game in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, Castlebar, at 1.30 p.m.

All funds raised will go to Mayo GAA’s charity partners, Mayo Cancer Support.

The game will also be streamed live by Mayo GAA TV. Match passes cost €12. Tickets for the game are on sale.

Mayo GAA have also confirmed that once this festive fixture is completed there’ll be a Meet and Greet with the players in the concourse at the back of the stand.
