Mayo school make history with Under 20 girls football title win

THE senior girls football team from St. Louis Community School in Kiltimagh have made history, securing provincial honours today.

This is the first time the school has fielded a team at Under 20 girls level and they were crowned Under 20 Connaught champions following a 4-1 win over Galway side Merlin College.

On a murky, dull day, the St. Louis girls - who were unbeaten all campaign - came up against a strong Merlin side, with some good technical football on show.

The Kiltimagh side led 1-0 at half-time, and with it still being anyone's game, they really pushed on in the second half to deservedly secure the win and write themselves into the history books.

It was the youngsters on the team who were to provide the goals, with Ava Mitchell hitting the net twice for St. Louis, and Mollie Gaughan and Ria Foy also on the score sheet.

All three goal scorers came through the underage ranks at local club Kiltimagh Knock United.

Captain Kellie Mallee - another KK stalwart - had the honours of being presented with the cup following the game, which was played in Headford.

The team manager is teacher Natalie Lundy, herself a top level player with Manulla FC women's team.
