Additional garda to take up duty in Mayo town in new year
An additional garda has been assigned to Killala Garda Station.
This news was confirmed at a meeting of Killala Community Alert.
The officer is expected to be in place in the new year.
Councillor Jarlath Munnelly stated that an additional garda in Killala was something that he and the community had been working on for some time.
“I am delighted at this news. Currently there is one garda assigned to Killala Garda Station – another pair of hands is something that the community has sought for some time and that I welcome.”
Councillor Munnelly paid tribute to Senator Mark Duffy, and community groups in Killala that had supported this call.
"I’d like to thank Senator Mark Duffy for his continued support and help on this issue, and I’d also like to thank Killala Community Alert, Killala Parish Council and Killala Community Council who have been writing to the gardaí and the Department of Justice on this issue, looking for more garda resources for Killala.
Senator Mark Duffy added: "I compliment Councillor Munnelly on the advocacy for this position and the leadership from the Killala community in working towards making it a safer place.”
In conclusion, Councillor Munnelly thanked the leadership of An Garda Síochána in the Ballina Division for their continued support for the wider area.
“We are lucky to have good people working for and leading An Garda Síochána in our area – they have looked for additional Garda resources for this area and I would particularly like to thank them for delivering on this.
