Belmullet’s Christmas lights shine thanks to local support

THIS year, it nearly happened - a Christmas in Belmullet without Christmas lights.

Rising energy costs, defunct old equipment and overheads meant the traditional display was in real jeopardy, and, for a time, it looked as though the streets of the town would remain dark during the festive season.

But the businesses and people of Belmullet and Erris had other ideas. When the gravity of the situation became clear, Erris Chamber stepped forward to take up the mantle, determined that the lights - and the Christmas spirit they represent - would not be lost.

The Chamber set out to bring the business community together, aiming to raise the necessary funds and turn a challenge into an opportunity for unity.

Momentum is vital in any fundraising effort, and Carne Links was the first to step up. Their immediate and very generous commitment gave the wider community confidence that this target could be met. That early show of support lit the spark, and very quickly others followed suit. What began as a worrying prospect soon became a powerful demonstration of what can happen when a community pulls together.

Thanks to the overwhelming response to the Chamber’s call, the required funds were raised, and the Christmas lights are once again shining across Belmullet. Every bulb on every street is now a reminder that, when needed, local businesses and community leaders are there for the town.

SPECIAL MESSAGE TO CUSTOMERS

While the businesses listed below provided the sponsorship to switch the lights on, they wish to make one thing clear: none of this would be possible without you, the customers.

On behalf of every shopkeeper, service provider, and business owner in Belmullet, the message is: 'A massive thank you to the public. It is your custom, day in and day out, that keeps our doors open. It is your loyalty that allows local businesses to survive, thrive, and give back to the town in moments like this.

'When you walk through our doors, you are doing more than just buying a product; you are supporting the families and employees behind the counter.'

Without the generosity of sponsors, the lights simply would not be there. Their willingness to respond so quickly and positively shows the depth of commitment that exists to Belmullet and the wider Erris area.

As we enjoy the glow of the Christmas lights this year, Erris Chamber is asking everyone to remember the businesses that made them possible.

Please shop local, eat local, and use local services wherever you can. Every purchase is a vote of confidence in the town and helps to keep jobs, services, and community spirit alive here at home.

Belmullet’s lights are shining again - and they are shining because this community chose to stand together.
