Floating Christmas tree returns to Mayo lake

THE much-admired Castlebar Tidy Towns floating Christmas tree has made a welcome return to Lough Lannagh this festive season, following a three-year absence.

Originally introduced in 2021, the 30-foot tree was created from recycled materials by local businessman Stanley Jackson and his son, Carl, after a suggestion from a Castlebar resident, Karen Rowland.

The tree was first launched during the Covid-19 period to bring cheer to the community, and quickly became a beloved feature, drawing hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors to the lake.

Ger Deere, chairperson of Castlebar Tidy Town, explained: “The response to the floating tree when it was first introduced was phenomenal. It brought great joy to locals and visitors alike.

“While circumstances prevented us from returning it in recent years, we felt it was time to restore it to its former glory and this year we’ve added something new.”

Thanks to the support of local company Éire Renewables, owned by Declan Hughes and Shane Sullivan, the tree is now powered by solar panels, ensuring it remains brightly lit throughout the Christmas period.

Ger added: “This is a fantastic addition that makes the tree more sustainable while continuing to light up the centre of the lake for all to enjoy. It adds greatly to the festive atmosphere at Lough Lannagh, which is such a popular amenity used daily by hundreds of people.”
