Respect urged for cyclists on Mayo roads over busy Christmas period
MOTORISTS are being urged to show respect to cyclists not travelling inside yellow lines on roads.
There's a reason they're not behind the line - risk of puncture, a council roads committee meeting was told.
Committee member Christy Hyland said he sees where horns are hooted at cyclists for not being behind yellow lines along roads.
However, he explained, the swish of traffic on the main road sends tiny pebbles into this area behind the line, with bicycle tyres punctured straight away if they cycle in there.
Bikes are costing into the thousands, and tyres are narrow, and they can't cycle inside the yellow line as they will puncture, he said. If motorists were educated on this they would understand.
With many people getting out and about on their bicycles over the Christmas period, Mr. Hyland appealed for road users to all show each other respect.
