Mayo man fined for failing to microchip greyhounds

A 33-year-old man who failed to microchip greyhounds in his possession has been fined.

Daryl Devers, of 45 Mount Assumpta, Ballina, pleaded guilty at a sitting of the local district court to a breach of the Animal Health and Welfare Act.

The court heard that on June 14, 2024, a garda search operation at the defendant’s premises came across a closed shed, where a number of greyhounds were inside.

The dogs were later found not to be microchipped. The dogs were in good health and there were no issues with their condition.

The defendant has no previous convictions in relation to failing to microchip dogs.

Solicitor Peter Loftus said his client had dogs on his property which belonged to his wife and friend and were held in the area under control.

The animals have all been microchipped since this incident. Judge Sandra Murphy imposed a fine of €250 on the defendant.
