Need to tackle e-scooter enforcement in Mayo
THE enforcement of e-scooter legislation in Mayo is to be discussed with the garda authorities.
The council roads strategic policy committee (SPC) has requested a meeting to see what can be done to tackle what is becoming 'an ever increasing problem'.
Councillor Damien Ryan raised his concerns at an SPC meeting, and he also brought them to the attention of Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan on a recent visit to Mayo, where he met with Fianna Fáil councillors.
Many people use e-scooters responsibly but there are some travelling on footpaths at speed, said Councillor Ryan. And it's only a matter of time before there is a fatality, he warned.
There is an enforcement issue, he said, and it was important to bring the gardaí in to discuss it. The councillor has also asked the minister to raise it with the Garda Commissioner.
Christy Hyland agreed, saying legislation need to be strengthened, including the power to seize vehicles.
