Moves to transform former Mayo swimming pool into a community hub

Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary has confirmed that moves are afoot to find a new use for the former swimming pool in Castlebar.

Funding of €47,000 has been allocated 'to support the preparatory phase of transforming the disused pool into a community hub'.

This will consist of the drafting of a feasibility study, the first phase of the process, in creating a modern, inclusive and international facility in association with Castlebar Celtic Football Club.

The club, which is located adjacent to the old facility, have been in talks with Mayo County Council in respect of acquiring the property for dressing-rooms and other club amenities.

There is expected to be movement on the matter early in the new year.

The announcement has been welcomed by Councillor Donna Sheridan who described it as 'a significant step forward'.
