Passing of former Ipswich Town star Rob Turner in Mayo

The death has taken place of Rob Turner, Bunnawillian, Bunnahowen, Belmullet.

He died peacefully at his residence earlier today, much to the regret of the local community where he was held in such high regard.

A retired member of the teaching staff of Our Lady’s Secondary School, Belmullet, Rob was a former professional footballer who played with distinction for Ipswich Town from 1973 to 1985, during which the club won the UEFA Cup.

During his career he was also on the books of MVV Maastricht, Swansea City, Colchester and Bury Town.

Rob also played for England at international youth level in 1974, making four appearance and scoring a goal.

He starred in the film, Escape to Victory.

A affable and courteous personality, he managed and coached at Iorras Aontaithe (Erris United) for a number of seasons.

He is deeply regretted by his wife Maureen (née Ruddy), family Ali, Samantha and Jack, and cherished grandfather to Danielle, Nathan, Charlie, Jack, Katie, Kayla and Finn.

He will also be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his son-in-law Killian, daughter-in-law Sarah, brothers Alan and Paul, sisters Wendy and Angie, colleagues and students at Our Lady’s Secondary School, Belmullet, kind neighbours and many friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

Rob was predeceased by his parents Robert and Sally Turner, sister Linda, father in law Jack Ruddy, mother in law Pat.

The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
