Dry Christmas Eve forecast for Mayo as settled spell continues

Mayo is set to enjoy a largely dry and settled Christmas Eve, with Met Eireann predicting bright spells and cold but calm conditions across the county.

Tomorrow will begin on a cloudy note, with some mist lingering in places during the early morning.

However, conditions are expected to improve as the day goes on, with spells of sunshine breaking through during the afternoon.

Temperatures will remain on the low side, reaching highs of between 6 and 8 degrees, while light to moderate north-east to east breezes will prevail.

Looking beyond Christmas Eve, a period of settled weather is forecast to continue throughout the Christmas period and into the New Year, as high pressure dominates weather patterns over the country.

While conditions will be largely dry, the outlook points to colder weather, with an easterly airflow bringing frost during the nights and early mornings.

Christmas Eve night is expected to be particularly cold but favourable for travel, with dry conditions and mostly clear skies forecast.

Temperatures are set to fall to between -2 and +2 degrees in many areas, with a widespread frost and some icy patches developing.

Forecasters note that Santa Claus and his reindeer should have ideal conditions for their journey around Ireland on Christmas Eve night, thanks to the calm and settled weather.

Winds overnight will be mostly light, coming from the east to north-east, although eastern coastal areas are expected to remain frost-free due to a moderate onshore breeze, with overnight lows of between +2 and +5 degrees.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution on untreated roads late on Christmas Eve and into Christmas morning due to the risk of frost and icy patches.
