Digital trail to highlight Mayo's Spanish Armada story

MAYO'S links to the Spanish Armada are set to become part of a virtual trail on this unique piece of maritime heritage.

The project is in its early stages, members of the council's economic and enterprise committee were told in a tourism update.

Mayo has a strong historical resonance with the Spanish Armada, with five ships floundering off the coast of the county in 1588. They included the San Nicolas Prodaneli and El Gran Grin, both of which sank at the mouth of Clew Bay.

Commitee members were told it's hoped to develop a Spanish Armada virtual trail, a digital trail stretching from Northern Ireland down to Mayo, with virtual hubs telling the story of the armada.

The project is still in its infancy.
