Realignment sought for three bridges in west Mayo
FUNDING under the road realignment scheme is going to be pursued to try and resolve issues at the three bridges in Cashel, scene of numerous accidents in Achill.
The bridges are structurally sound; the problem is that they are too narrow, a municipal district meeting heard.
Acting head of roads Conrad Harley believes that instead of chasing bridges funding, where they fall down the list when structural issues arise at other bridges, they should look for a realignment, allowing the bridges to be widened and the sharpness taken off them.
In the meantime, additional measures will be sought to keep the location safer, he said.
Mr. Harley was responding to questions from local Councillor Paul McNamara who has asked on several occasions if an application for funding for the bridges has been submitted.
He acknowledged works done this year to slow traffic, but accidents continue to occur and it’s only a matter of time before a fatality occurs, he warned.
