Vehicle seized in Mayo town due to several road traffic breaches
As part of its ongoing road safety Christmas campaign, members of the Mayo Roads Policing Unit had it attention drawn by a vehicle in Charlestown.
On further inspection, the following road traffic breaches were detected.
* Expired learner permit holder.
* NCT expired two and half years.
* No Tax.
* Bald Tyre (space saver) on vehicle for a number of weeks.
* One working highlight/dip beam.
* Broken wing mirror.
* Front brake pads missing/ no brake fluid in reservoir.
Driver confirmed using the handbrake to slow the vehicle down.
Gardaí seized the vehicle as it suspected to be dangerous/defective.
A PSV examination of the car will now take place and court proceedings will follow.
A garda spokesperson said: "Having no brake fluid means your hydraulic brakes won't work at all, leading to a pedal that goes to the floor with little or no stopping power, making the car extremely dangerous to drive.
"Space-saver tires are for temporary use, requiring strict adherence to speed and distance limits to get to a repair garage, as they have reduced grip, braking, and handling, necessitating slower, cautious driving.
"With cold weather conditions promised in the coming days you should always ensure that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before setting off on your journey."
