Further action sought on Mayo junction visibility concerns
People living near the junction of Breaffy Road and the Balloor Road in Castlebar want further action to address safety issues at the location.
Councillor Harry Barrett said some small changes have been made recently to the works being carried out following pressure from local residents, anyone using this junction knows it is still far from safe.
"I welcome the adjustments that have been carried out.
"Residents asked for action and some progress has been made.
"However, the clear message I am getting from people in the area is that this is only a first step.
"The approach from the Balloor Road side is far too narrow, visibility is restricted, and drivers are forced into risky situations every day.
"Residents have told me plainly that the road must be widened on the Balloor side so that there is full and proper visibility when entering the junction.
"As it stands, the narrow approach makes it difficult to see oncoming traffic, and this is causing real fear for families, pedestrians and motorists alike.
"I have discussed this matter directly with the engineering staff in Mayo County Council.
"I have asked that the widening of the Balloor Road approach be progressed as a matter of urgency and treated as a road safety priority. I will continue to press this issue until it's sorted. "
