Locations of Mayo's new safety camera zones revealed in speed crackdown

A significant escalation of measures to help eradicate road deaths and serious traffic accidents across Mayo is underway.

Nine people lost their lives while travelling on roads across the county in 2025, down from 18 in 2024 and 11 in 2023.

Now, in a concerted effort to maintain the downward trend, new safety camera zones have become operational at 15 new locations.

They are in place along routes were 28 traffic accidents occurred in recent years, resulting in five fatalities and 13 serious injuries.

Included are three community request safety camera zones on the R311 Newport to Castlebar Road between Derrycoosh and Drumilra, the N59 between Knocknageeha and Derryloughanmore, Newport, and on the L1610 between Crossboyne Cemetery and Crossboyne Lodge, Claremorris.

Prior to this initiative, the county primarily relied on an average speed camera along the N5 Swinford by-pass and static camera on the N17 at Balinsmaula, near Claremorrius, as well as the mobile safety camera zones operated by GoSafe vans.

The new zones were selected based on an analysis of past collision rate, including fatal, serious and minor road collisions.

They are designed to detect rogue motorists and prevent reckless speeding behaviour and save lives.

Tragically, Ireland saw its highest level of road deaths (179) in over a decade last year.

A statement by An Garda Síochána outlined: "We need to adjust attitudes to driver behaviour and make issues like driving while under the influence of any intoxicant, speeding and driving while being distracted unacceptable.

"As a society we need to call them out.

“By working together as communities we can all make our roads safer."

The 12 new safety camera zones selected as a result of garda analysis in Mayo are located as follows:

1. Ballina town centre between the Parochial Hall, Bury Street, and Martech Design Solutions, O'Rahilly Street.

2. R300 between Colaíste Muire, Corheen, and Gurteen, Tourmakeady.

3. R311 between Blackfort Road to Ellison Street, Castlebar.

4. R314 between Derrynameel and Derrycorrib, Belmullet.

5. R319 between Polranny Cemetery and Saula, Achill.

6. R319 between Cashel and Dookinella, Achill.

7. R345 between Caherduff, The Neale, Ballinrobe, to the junction with the R334.

8. N84 between Carrowkeel and Ballymartin, Ballinrobe.

9. N17 between Coyne Tyres to Lurga Lower, Charlestown.

10. Stretch of N5 at Cloonlara, Swinford.

11. N16 Cuilmore to Drumkeen, Claremorris.

12. Esker Pines, Devlin, Ballyhaunis, to Flogas, Hazelhill, Ballyhaunis.
