Prominent Mayo dereliction black spot to be demolished and replaced by 13 apartments
Mayo County Council has initiated steps to demolish four derelict sites in its ownership at Ellison Street, Castlebar.
The authority has served public notice of its intention, under Part 8 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, to commence works at one of the county town's most prominent derelict eyesores.
The proposed development at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6, Ellison Street, consists of the demolition of the existing properties and the construction, in their place, of 13 own-door access apartments.
The project, unveiled by Olivia Gallagher, head of housing, and David Mellett, head of Castlebar Municipal District, will consist of one studio apartment, six one bedroom apartments, four two-bedroom apartments and two three-room units.
The scheme includes pedestrian access from Ellison Street to the new homes, including the provision of a new public access routeway, internal footpaths, public lighting, boundary works and landscaping.
The design proposals includes a new building to the front which engages and intergrates with the historic streetscape, followed by a courtyard and a smaller apartment building to the rear of the site.
The plan incorporates a new archway which will facilitate a future public access route through to the lands behind, enhancing permeability and urban interest in the core of the town.
Submissions in respect of the proposal can be lodged to the planning section of Mayo County Council no later than February 18.
